Future-Ready HR Function
The capabilities, structures, and mindsets HR needs to lead through what comes next.
The question
“What must the HR function become to remain relevant in the next 5 years?”
Why this matters
The HR function is being asked to modernise and scale simultaneously — more strategic influence, leaner cost base, and AI-native tooling. Most HR operating models were designed for none of these.
Original viewpoint — Swati Jain
My working design for a future-ready HR function has three shifts. From function to platform: HR services delivered through digital experiences, with humans reserved for the moments that matter. From HRBP to Product Owner: senior HR partners own outcomes — retention, engagement, capability — not activities. From CoE to Studio: Centres of Excellence become smaller, more senior, more design-led — setting standards, not producing artefacts.
The bottleneck is almost never talent. It is role clarity. Most HR teams are underperforming not because the people are wrong — but because the role boundaries have not been re-drawn for the new operating model.
Community thought space
Community prompts:
- What HR role, if it disappeared tomorrow, would nobody notice?
- Which HR capability is your function under-hiring for right now?
- How much of your HR budget goes to service delivery vs strategic design? What should that ratio be?
